Swap Til You Drop

May 29th, 2007 by Katie

Style SwapThe Biore Style Swap is founded on the idea that one person’s trash is another’s treasure. If you think about it, it is true that your favorite tee came from a thrift store… and those hoop earrings you came to hate are now your little sister’s faves. Fortunately, Cosmopolitan and Biore recently teamed up to bring you the first national Biore Style Swap tour. It’s the largest clothing swap to date, which will travel to 10 major cities in the U.S. I just so happened to be on hand for the tour’s NYC kick-off at an indescript loft in the Garment District.

Georgia on My Mind

May 10th, 2007 by Lola

Rosa Mexicano“I’m Georgia, and I’ve got some rules,” quipped Jane Fonda at the premiere of Georgia Rule on Tuesday night. Sure, the joke was lame, but Ms. Fonda was looking like a stone cold fox, so I’ll forgive her. Standing next to her, Gloria Steinem, another foxy femme-it-forward advocate, stepped up to the mic to speak about the Women’s Media Center. She, Fonda and writer/activist Robin Morgan founded the Center in 2004, and tonight was the organization’s first glitzy Hollywood-style event.

A Star Is Born

Isaac MizrahiEver since discovering at 16 that I don’t have a voice like Whitney and a singing career was not in the cards for me, I’ve been looking for other ways to steal the spotlight. So when my Inbox dinged and notified me of an opportunity to appear on the Isaac Mizrahi show, I was one thousand percent in. The premise was this: I would be attending a cocktail party hosted by Isaac. After chatting with Mr. Mizrahi about cocktail party style, two other ladies and I would storm through his on-set fashion closet (my pura vida) and become transformed and ready for drinks!

Old Money, New Couture

April 11th, 2007 by Katie

JamilThe hotel’s plush sitting nooks begged for socialite gossip. The lobby filled with whispers and left-right kiss salutations. The crowd was obviously heavy with anticipation for 2005 International Designer of the Year, Jamil Khansa’s, reveal. Men sporting fur coats over pressed tuxedos brandished their portfolios and dignitaries were greeted with acknowledging nods as models fitted in couture gowns scattered backstage. International Couture Fashion week brought the usual fashion dichotomy of diplomats and divas together at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in February.

Masquerade with Me

December 19th, 2006 by Katie

Masquerade BallThe forces of the universe conspired to lure me into a dark hotel with strangely masked men as November expired. To clarify, JuliB.com lured me to the Night Hotel with complimentary Rioja wine for a Masquerade party. AKA; A not-so-well disguised orgy of event planners and party-hoppers.

Given the night’s mysterious vibe, I was not surprised to catch lingering glances exchanged through decadant masks. As the deep bass pounded, more and more men arrived in charcoal suits and the number of women in litte-black dresses increased. Slowly, the world seemed to evolve into a monochromatic underground layer for VIPs only.

Choc It Up

November 14th, 2006 by Lola

Ice Cream DressThey say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. And, as we know, every sexy lady likes to get gussied up in a hot dress. Now you can combine the two in a devilishly delectably way—an edible dress! Now I’m not talking edible in the fruit roll-up, stripper panties sense. I’m talking about a gourmet gown made of chocolate, the rich and mouth-watering kind that appeared on the runway at the 9th Annual Chocolate Show.

Candy DressAs soon as I entered Metropolitan Pavilion, I was greeted with a slice of extra-dark Cacao Reserve chocolate and a glass of red wine by Robert Mondavi. Though I am not a big fan of either red wine or dark chocolate, the combination was truly delicious. A sensual explosion, if you will. Spread across two huge rooms, the show featured more than 100 booths of the sweet stuff, from sweet white to bitter dark—spicy, fruity, filled with nuts, and everything in between.
