Swap Til You Drop

May 29th, 2007 by Katie

Style SwapThe Biore Style Swap is founded on the idea that one person’s trash is another’s treasure. If you think about it, it is true that your favorite tee came from a thrift store… and those hoop earrings you came to hate are now your little sister’s faves. Fortunately, Cosmopolitan and Biore recently teamed up to bring you the first national Biore Style Swap tour. It’s the largest clothing swap to date, which will travel to 10 major cities in the U.S. I just so happened to be on hand for the tour’s NYC kick-off at an indescript loft in the Garment District.

Abra Cadabra

DecampsAny single gal in New York is used to smooth talkers. The last thing anybody hopes to encounter during a night on the town is a man who’ll use all his charming stories and fancy tricks to make a fool of you. Unless, of course, the man playing tricks is Magician Eric DeCamps. Having spent last Wednesday night being charmed and deceived by The Society of American Magicians’ award-winning Magician of the Year, I speak from experience.

After recently watching The Prestige, starring the delicious Christian Bale, I looked forward to an evening of illusion – the illusion being that I was Scarlett Johansson, called upon to fill the role of the beautiful and charming volunteer who disappears into thin air before the eyes of the audience. To ensure that was the case, I took a seat as close to the front row as possible. All said and done, that’s not quite how it played out… but close enough.

Let’s Go Crazy

May 18th, 2007 by Lauren

San LocoMargaritas for $4 and 20-cent tacos? Like most New Yorkers, when I hear this kind of too-good-to-be-true deal, I’m immediately skeptical. But let me assure you, I have been to the urban dining mirage. It’s name is San Loco, the patron saint of crazy delicious.

I recently dropped by San Loco’s Williamsburg location to play a game of pool, sip on a couple margaritas and see what 20 cents gets you these days in tacos. I was sure that those 20-cent tacos would be bite size. Nope. They’re big enough that I’ll personally give anyone who can finish three of them a pat on the back.

The United States of TV Land

April 25th, 2007 by Katie

Bill ClintonForget boxers versus briefs, Harlem transplant Bill Clinton favors I Love Lucy, Grey’s Anatomy, 24 and Boston Legal. With these must-knows out of the way, the former president took full advantage of a full hour in a room with TV’s most powerful party — advertisers.

Clinton was the show-stopper for TV Land’s 2007 upfront presentation, where network execs hosted a sneak peek of their fall shows for media buyers. The scene was reminiscent of the Senate floor, with every suit trying to rally votes — I mean ad space. I was astonished that the perks of being an advertising constituent now included being in the same room as the former president. I had under-estimated my party’s power.

A Little Night Music

April 20th, 2007 by Lola

Buffy FansDamn it, Janet, Rocky is no longer the champ. These days, a new sing-a-long sensation is slaying the nation – it’s Buffy! At the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sing-A-Long, kazoos, bubbles, streamer explosions and Fabio all add up to an unforgettable evening of homage to the show’s legendary musical episode, “Once More with Feeling.”

When I arrived at the West Village’s IFC Center at 11:20 p.m. (45 full minutes before the screening), about 25 hardcore Whedon enthusiasts were already queued up. Twenty short minutes later, Sing-A-Long Xander, a.k.a. Joshua Ziesel, was passing out (free!) blood-red gift bags with all the tools necessary to enjoy the night—kazoos for the dramatic climax, bunny pencil erasers in honor of Anya’s irrational fear, monster finger puppets, and, of course, vampire teeth.

Gen Art Film Festival

April 18th, 2007 by Lauren

Crashing“You have to pace yourself,” Gen Art Founder Ian Gerard says to the audience before the film opening of the festival. This is the 12th Annual Gen Art Film Festival and he’s speaking of the 7 films and 7 after parties to come in this one week stretch of films. As I look around at the audience, I know that some festival-goers will heed his advice, while others pretend not to hear and foolishly ignore sleep. 7 films and 7 parties??? - a wet dream for the hip, in-the-know crowds who support this organization for emerging arts and entertainment figures.
