Cool Britannia: Nobu Riche

June 6th, 2007 by Lola

Nobu LondonI am nothing if not an international fly gal, so, after graduating from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, I hopped the pond to Jolly Olde England in celebration of my new designation as a Master of Science. Yep, you’ve got that right—Science. Of course, no trip to a foreign land is complete without a little reminder of home. Enter Nobu Berkeley Street, the London branch of NYC’s celeb-studded sushi joint.

Those of you who consider yourself happy castaways on the island of Manhattan needn’t avert your eyes just yet because I’m certain star chef Nobu Matsuhisa—known around the world as one of the Iron Chef trio—packs the same culinary punch whether on our island or in the British Isles.

The Perfect Margarita and Guacamole: I’m into Blockheads

May 31st, 2007 by Erica

BlockheadsI never thought I’d say this, but I’m really into Blockheads. The restaurant, that is. How can you not be into a business that has sock monkeys as its mascot?

Since the weather finally reached a gorgeous, sunny springtime feel, I headed for Midtown West’s Worldwide Plaza last Friday night. And so, it seems, did the rest of Manhattan. The area was packed full of Manhattanites. More importantly, however, were the $4 fruity (and strong) frozen margaritas. Turns out, happy hour is every hour at Blockheads!

Swap Til You Drop

May 29th, 2007 by Katie

Style SwapThe Biore Style Swap is founded on the idea that one person’s trash is another’s treasure. If you think about it, it is true that your favorite tee came from a thrift store… and those hoop earrings you came to hate are now your little sister’s faves. Fortunately, Cosmopolitan and Biore recently teamed up to bring you the first national Biore Style Swap tour. It’s the largest clothing swap to date, which will travel to 10 major cities in the U.S. I just so happened to be on hand for the tour’s NYC kick-off at an indescript loft in the Garment District.

Let’s Go Crazy

May 18th, 2007 by Lauren

San LocoMargaritas for $4 and 20-cent tacos? Like most New Yorkers, when I hear this kind of too-good-to-be-true deal, I’m immediately skeptical. But let me assure you, I have been to the urban dining mirage. It’s name is San Loco, the patron saint of crazy delicious.

I recently dropped by San Loco’s Williamsburg location to play a game of pool, sip on a couple margaritas and see what 20 cents gets you these days in tacos. I was sure that those 20-cent tacos would be bite size. Nope. They’re big enough that I’ll personally give anyone who can finish three of them a pat on the back.

The Perfect Margarita & Guacamole: Rio Grande, Indeed

April 17th, 2007 by Erica

El Rio GrandeSpring is upon us—or so they tell me; you certainly wouldn’t know it after the current spell of cold, damp weather we’ve had. For me, the return of warm weather and sunshine signals the perfect time for sandals, skirts, sun dresses and my two favorite things: margaritas and guacamole. Who am I am kidding, really? In my book, any time is the perfect time for margs and guac, but at least the change of season allows us to enjoy them outside (eventually).

I have traveled long and hard, far and wide on this isle of Manhattan in search of the perfect salty-rimmed marg and tangy, creamy glob of guac. In honor of this search, my next few posts will feature the tastiest Mexican restaurants in the city. Instead of saving the best for last, let’s bring it up first: El Rio Grande. After a long day at work, nothing beats heading to El Rio Grande, my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant on 38th Street in Murray Hill. The spot boasts amazing food and strong (comes with a warning from the bartender), flavorful margaritas—easily the best in Manhattan.

Setting The Scene

February 2nd, 2007 by Lola

the sceneFor those of us below the 35+ television viewer demographic, Tony Shalhoub is not exactly a household name. Same for Patricia Heaton, though her foray into the world of breast lift surgery was well-documented in the pages of Us Weekly or People a few years ago. Both are immensely talented actors who have racked up multiple Emmys - Shalhoub for his turn as an OCD San Francisco detective Monk, and Heaton for putting up with Ray Romano’s nasal drivel for nine seasons (nine seasons!). But now, my glamour pusses, they are co-starring in The Scene, an Off-Broadway play that merits even the youngsters’ attention.
