In On the Jokes

Comix NYC“Ladies, do you realize when you’re on a plane… your vagina is flying?” That would be a no. And then I went to Comix. I checked out the club’s Happy Thursday Show recently, hosted by my friend Jordan Carlos, featuring comedy from Jeff Sussman, Jay Nog and headliner Russ Meneve.

I walked into the club thinking, I am in the wrong place. Every comedy club I have ever visited in downtown Manhattan always seems to feature the same “charming” too-low ceilings, musty aroma and bad food (not to mention a two-drink minimum, at least). By the end of the night at Comix, however, my opinion had changed forever.

Sweet Cup of Joe

May 3rd, 2007 by Tracee

Front of Joe'sWhen you see a crowd of attractive Villagers flocking to a coffee zone sans wi-fi at all hours of the day, you must wonder how good the coffee actually is. After several visits I have to give my two thumbs up to Joe - The Art of Coffee, a Greenwich Village treat with three locations, including my favorite — located at the corner of Waverly and Gay Streets.

Spring Forward

April 13th, 2007 by Tracee

Second Avenue DanceMy friend Greg, a lighting designer, called out of the blue to ask me to come see some dancing. The chance to watch a dance performance is something I can never refuse, so off I went on a Sunday night. This particular performance, produced by NYU’s Tisch School of the Art’s Second Avenue Dance Company was part of their Spring Concert Series. Needless to say, by the end of the night my love for dance was re-ignited.

The show showcased a mix of contemporary and modern pieces conceived by both student works and guest choreographers. The dancers were strong, the music, at times, very powerful, and the student-designed lighting scheme a delight to take in. On the whole the show boasted tremendous variety. I was especially excited to watch “Vespers,” Ulysses Dove’s mind-blowing piece originally choreographed in 1986.

Samsung StoreLet the children have their ferris wheels and big stuffed African animals, give me sound systems, the slimmest phones you have ever seen and motion animated maps of New York. I have fallen in love–with a toy store. The kind I could roam around for an hour instead of, well, actually shopping. I am talking about the Samsung Experience.

an oak tree

December 3rd, 2006 by Tracee

an oak tree flyerAs New York’s night life spots draw me indoors, and my drinks of choice move from a cold imported beer to a smooth, rich red wine, I have to ponder where a city girl can go while staying reasonably warm. It hit me while I floated through various New York blogs. What could be a more perfect winter activity than seeing a play in a cozy, intimate theater? I found an ideal option at the Barrow Street Theatre: Tim Crouch’s two-person play, an oak tree.

Urinetown

November 2nd, 2006 by Tracee

Urine TownSamantha, Carrie and the girls did it. Now it was my turn. Though I am in no way proclaiming Brooklyn to be “out,” I must admit that it wouldn’t be my first choice to take in a musical extravaganza. I went with fellow Glamourite Lauren to see The Gallery Players perform Urinetown, The Musical, an off-off Broadway performance of the offbeat musical set in a townwhere “Rich folks get the good life…poor folks get the woe!” I was excited to see what The Gallery Players, who are celebrating their 40th anniversary this season, would do with a Tony-winning show about… well… pee.
