Shameless plugs for sites I like.

This post deviates from our glamourite theme a bit, but there are so many great sites out there, it’s a shame not to give them the spotlight on occassion! Therefore I will try to post this list every Saturday.

Recently a friend started the website Profiles in Toolness which is similar to craigslist rants, but it’s a site completely dedicated to ranting about tools, and confessing to being a tool and apologizing. It’s a great idea, and hours of fun.

Scarlett turns Scarlet

Spotted Pig

As more ads for The Black Dahlia surface on television, I keep being reminded of a night when I visited the Spotted Pig in Manhattan’s West Village a few months ago. Though I have been to the Spotted Pig many times, the movie reminds me of this particular visit because Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett were hanging out with Jay Z. Random group? I thought so.

Xicala

Xicala

Each time I find an amazing new place in New York, I debate sharing it with others and potentially “ruining” it, but I can’t help but mention my newest favorite wine bar - Xicala - in Nolita. Xicala is a tiny Spanish wine bar with about 8 high tables and a bar. It’s especially nice in the summer or when it’s raining because the front opens up and there are small tables outside under a rooftop. Behind the bar, the walls are wine racks, and looking at the bottles all lined up made me very thirsty. I had a fantastic full-bodied red wine suggested by the bartender - and coupled it with several of the vegetarian choices from their tapas menu.

Foodie Mecca

James Beard

I started learning the intricacies of the food industry about a year ago through friends in the industry. It was the first time I heard anyone referred to as a “foodie” and I thought it was slightly amusing that there was an entire industry around food and that it could be just as prestigious as the fashion industry, if not more. I decided I wanted to learn more and began to immerse myself in this new world by reading the different food reviews in magazines, attending dinners with chefs to get their opinions on other chefs’ meals, watching Kelly Choi speak with Chefs on her show Eat Out New York, and reading the different foodie blogs. Eventually I felt like I had achieved a certain level of confidence in my palate, which led me to jump at the chance to attend a dinner at the mecca of all foodies: The James Beard House.

Sotheby’s Auction Benefitting RSRF

August 3rd, 2006 by Jasmine

Sothebys Auction House

I attended my very first event at Sotheby’s Auction House – the world’s oldest international auction house, a couple of weeks ago. I had never seen a live auction – complete with signs to hold up for bids, so I was excited to be finally experiencing one. The event and auction was to benefit the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation (RSRF), an extremely heart-wrenching disorder that affects young girls and has finally been proven to be genetic. A child can be born completely fine and develop the same as any other child, and then around 6-18 months (over two years old!), the child will “enter into a period of regression losing speech and motor skills.” It is possible in boys as well, though for some reason it mostly affects females.
