The Perfect Margarita and Guacamole: I’m into Blockheads

May 31st, 2007 by Erica

BlockheadsI never thought I’d say this, but I’m really into Blockheads. The restaurant, that is. How can you not be into a business that has sock monkeys as its mascot?

Since the weather finally reached a gorgeous, sunny springtime feel, I headed for Midtown West’s Worldwide Plaza last Friday night. And so, it seems, did the rest of Manhattan. The area was packed full of Manhattanites. More importantly, however, were the $4 fruity (and strong) frozen margaritas. Turns out, happy hour is every hour at Blockheads!

Despite the fact that we arrived during post-work prime time, my three friends and I snagged a table and immediately ordered the chosen two: guacamole and margaritas. My fave Blockheads margs were the mango and the Black Flower, an amazing mix of sangria and frozen margarita. The cocina also turns out various delectable food choices, including the Lo-Carb Burrito Plate for the health nuts and the Quesadilla Grande. All entrees cost between $8 and $12, so one really can’t go wrong.

Unfortunately, as far as service is concerned, you get what you pay for. Once we had decided our orders, we tried to track down our waitress. We waited….and waited. After we had each finished margarita numero uno, she finally turned up again. Perhaps the restaurant will wise up to the rush of margarita fiends and hire more staff this summer. On the upside, our food arrived seemingly minutes after we ordered it. It wasn’t the best Mexican I’ve ever had (El Rio Grande still holds that title), but Blockheads is a case study in getting the most bang for your buck.

Even though they made the service hectic, the hordes of people did provide ample distraction for the people-watcher in me. Case in point, I found myself smack in the middle of a celebrity sighting when I spotted Kathy Griffin, Cyndi Lauper and Rosie O’Donnell recently. The three of them had apparently been at a rehearsal for Cyndi’s upcoming True Colors Tour 2007 for Human Rights. Despite Rosie’s recent scuffle with her now-former Viewmates, she proved quite amicable when I saw her. She and the other ladies happily chatted up passersby, including a group of sailors (oh, Fleet Week!).

Even better than the star gazing was the fact that the wait staff at Blockheads didn’t rush us away from our table after we finished. But, as they say, all good things (even the most laid-back Friday evening dinner) must come to an end. As we giddily left the table, we couldn’t help but happily wander the streets of New York City and enjoy the first of (hopefully) many fine, spring evenings in this beautiful city. After all, girls just wanna have fun, right Cyndi?

I never really thought about going to blockheads. It’s not too far away from my place, so I should definitely try it out sometime - and you can’t beat $4 margs and outdoor seating!!
