Let’s Go Crazy

May 18th, 2007 by Lauren

San LocoMargaritas for $4 and 20-cent tacos? Like most New Yorkers, when I hear this kind of too-good-to-be-true deal, I’m immediately skeptical. But let me assure you, I have been to the urban dining mirage. It’s name is San Loco, the patron saint of crazy delicious.

I recently dropped by San Loco’s Williamsburg location to play a game of pool, sip on a couple margaritas and see what 20 cents gets you these days in tacos. I was sure that those 20-cent tacos would be bite size. Nope. They’re big enough that I’ll personally give anyone who can finish three of them a pat on the back.

Everything on the menu is made-to-order from scratch, including slow-simmered chipotle chicken, their specialty pork pipian and guacamole that’s the real deal. Now I’m serious about my guac. I do make it the best after all, but for my money, San Loco’s guac, which they mash from fresh avocados, comes in at a close second. I’m also serious about my margaritas — my Mom makes them the best. But, at San Loco, I recommend the blue margaritas. Not only do they have the most alcohol, but they also have the charm (and color) of an old-school slurpie.

Once satisfied with food and drink, I always take into consideration the pool table. San Loco’s is in the back of the restaurant, making me one happy lady. And as for the service? In a word, excellent. This is a place full of happy, friendly people. I’ve never met staff that spoke so highly of their owners and who still eat the food they serve everyday.

To celebrate four branches and 20 years of success, San Loco will offer tacos for 20 cents this Sunday, May 20. I’ll be at the Second Avenue location. I’ll probably start early since Monday and work always come calling early when margaritas are involved, but tacos will be eaten and margaritas will be imbibed.

Lesson learned: Quality over quantity always. But when you find a place that offers both quality and quantity, you can afford to go a little crazy.
