In On the Jokes

“Ladies, do you realize when you’re on a plane… your vagina is flying?” That would be a no. And then I went to Comix. I checked out the club’s Happy Thursday Show recently, hosted by my friend Jordan Carlos, featuring comedy from Jeff Sussman, Jay Nog and headliner Russ Meneve.
I walked into the club thinking, I am in the wrong place. Every comedy club I have ever visited in downtown Manhattan always seems to feature the same “charming” too-low ceilings, musty aroma and bad food (not to mention a two-drink minimum, at least). By the end of the night at Comix, however, my opinion had changed forever.
I entered the Chelsea club not knowing yet what to expect. Fifteen dollars later, a hostess seated me in the main room. At tables that encircled the stage, a mix of casual and trendy comedy connoisseurs sat happily awaiting their drinks and laughter. Jordan took the stage, sporting his trademark Afro and black framed glasses, to introduce the first comic, Jess Sussman. Sussman quipped about his Jewish upbringing and Jewish mother, ultimately putting to particularly effective use a rug-like chest hair piece in a take-off of the Incredible Hulk.
Next up, Nog came on stage — in more ways than I ever hoped to experience. His most memorable bit involved an uncanny impersonation of the sound his penis should make during at climax. Carrying on the perverted jokes for the night, Russ Meneve displayed his bubbling wit and left me laughing out even as I walked out the door onto West 14th Street and Ninth Avenue.
Even better, I had a fantastic meal during the show. As anyone who’s been to a comedy club knows, they’re not exactly known for their haute cuisine. I noshed on a delectable combination of lemon tahini dressing over a chopped salad with toasted pita and hummus. To suit my cocktail fancy after the show, I caught some happy hour-priced drinks in Comix’s lounge area and gabbed with the comedians, all of whom hung out after the show. And for anyone launching a spring romance or summer fling, Comix would make a great date spot. Eat, drink and be merry!
