A Star Is Born

April 12th, 2007 by Jane Marie

Isaac MizrahiEver since discovering at 16 that I don’t have a voice like Whitney and a singing career was not in the cards for me, I’ve been looking for other ways to steal the spotlight. So when my Inbox dinged and notified me of an opportunity to appear on the Isaac Mizrahi show, I was one thousand percent in. The premise was this: I would be attending a cocktail party hosted by Isaac. After chatting with Mr. Mizrahi about cocktail party style, two other ladies and I would storm through his on-set fashion closet (my pura vida) and become transformed and ready for drinks!

My taste of celebrity put me through a couple of whirlwind moments. First, I had an appointment with Isaac’s stylists to figure out what fab ensemble I would be wearing on the show. Two hours after shaking the stylists’ hands, I was strutting across the studio like I was on the runway in a pair of to-die-for Loomstate jeans. It didn’t matter that the black and leopard print, patent leather wedges they put me in were ½ a size too big and I had to edit my gate to avoid stumbling. All that mattered was that I looked 2 sizes smaller and 3 inches taller. Next stop: Hair and Make-up.

Before I knew it we were on set standing next to Isaac. Now I’ve never actually watched the Isaac Mizrahi show, but I’ve seen him interviewed enough to know that he is three of my favorite things: Flamboyant, fashionable and fun. I quickly learned that Isaac’s charms are turned on and off for the camera. At one point, I actually heard him refer to himself as “The Talent.” However, my distaste for Isaac’s off-camera snobbishness instantly melted away the minute he uttered the words to me, “…you’re so pretty.” It didn’t matter that he refused to speak to me after the director said cut. All that mattered was that the whole world would see Isaac Mizrahi, the man infamous for jiggling Scarlett Johansssen’s breast on the red carpet, tell me that I am “so pretty” right after he told the girl next to me that she needs a tan.

Even if it was just for a fleeting moment, it was heaven. I think I might start referring to myself as “The Talent.”
