Ice, Ice Baby

November 28th, 2006 by Katie

Bryant Park Ice Rink“This winter everyone gets to be an 8-year old again, unless of course you’re a 7-year old,” encourages a banner above the newly opened Bryant Park ice skating rink on 42nd street between 5th and 6th avenues. In an anti-aging effort I evited a few friends and glamourites to take a lap around the ice slab and turn back the years on a bright Saturday morning. Surprisingly, a group of early twenty-somethings showed up at 11am sharp (excluding this glamourite) without a promise of free credit cards or kamikaze shots.

Fortunately, this is one block in midtown not formed from neighboring highrises so the sunrays shining down supplemented the coffee awakening the group. A decade sans practice left me as nervous as a schoolgirl so I tightened my grip onto sturdier friends. Upon scanning the crowd I noticed that through the Broadway tunes and hooligan children skating in my path, this really was a rendesvous for every New Yorker’s to-do list. If the candy-cane holiday goodness gets to be too much, Celsius, the Canadian bar and lounge on The Pond’s campus, not only makes drinks with a twist but has an outdoor seating area for liquor-enthusiasts to encourage rookie skaters and mock troublemakers that bite it after weaving in and out of the crowds.

Finally a night out on the town will cost you less than a pack of cigarettes. For a cheap date, stop by with $8.75 per rental and a bit of misletoe. You are so in.

Kate, a great read here! I can tell you had at least some fun, yet it’s true that I never really took you guys ICE skating . . . so I’m a bit at fault, you might say. I hope you’re having a great week! Love, Me (Hi from Christopher too!)
