First Night Out in NYC

New York City

My first night out in New York City, three years ago, began at my friend Tess’s Upper East Side duplex apartment. I quickly changed into my best going-out attire and Tess and I left for Chelsea, where we would begin our evening. First stop: Le Singe Vert. Despite Tess’s newly taken status, she had managed to meet a very accomplished and charming media hound, who joined us for the evening. As we ordered our first round of Cosmos (at 4 p.m., no less), Tess got me up to speed on how they met on a ferry coming back from the beach that weekend. Tess mentioned that one of her friends (me) was coming to New York to interview and he insisted on going out for a pre-interview, pre-job celebration.

The celebration went on to include many delectable French dishes and five more rounds of Cosmos. As we wrapped up dinner I was told we were heading to SoHo to meet a friend. A bit tipsy by this point, I was game for whatever Manhattan had in store. Once there, we settled in at an adorable wine bar, sipped Muscat, and waited for Tess’s SoHo beach buddy to meet us. Two glasses in I could feel my drunken state elevating.

Cappuccinos sobered us enough for us to get to our next locale: The Hotel Gansevoort. Up the elevator and into a lounge, we came upon a scene filled with Mohitos and men. A couple of those Mohitos later the scene began to spin. A round of shots with a group of dark and oh-so handsome men helped, and at that point I would have agreed to almost any plan of action. Luckily, Tess swept me up before I had the chance to do anything stupid. Correction: anything more stupid than the amount of liquor I had consumed in the twelve hours we spent on the town.
