Talk About Gorgeous
August 31st, 2006 by Katie
Sunday nights are not for Grey’s Anatomy and pizza delivery in New York City. They are a hidden gem for great performances and weekend wrap-up cocktails without hordes of people literally stepping on your toes. In accordance, I found myself with my Glamourite girls, Tracee and Elle, sipping on a gin and tonic, con splash-of-grapefruit, on a school night in West Chelsea. Thankfully the venue, ‘Bright Bar,’ had a hip crowd with eyecandy for days. Of course, that’s the tease about going to an event with a gay audience. Beautiful men are expected, but here we also discovered the gorgeous Ms. Candis Cayne.
After years of performances, Candis represents the transgender community with a light-hearted, contagious attitude. Her credentials, including helping choreograph “To Wong Foo,” and winning the coveted Miss Continental transgender talent and beauty contest, only further her star status. She took the stage with an energetic, no-nonsense presence for her weekly one-woman “Gorgeous Show”. A combination of sex-kitten choreography with comedy that grabbed the attention of both the crowd and unknowing passers-by.
Given a criminal investigation at the bar a few doors down, we were surprised to see 3 dozen coppers standing on the sidewalks with large bright lights usually seen only at a stadium - making the street seem as though it was AM instead of PM. As you can imagine, this just gave Candis more ammunition. She began to poke fun at the NYPD Command Unit trailer across the street and the policemen peaking out the windows for a better look. When WALK signs blinked on the crosswalks, Candis would even run outside (the crowd scurrying behind for a view) and do her infamous high-kicking, booty-shaking in the middle of street - even stopping taxis and on-the-go traffic.
As C.C.’s dedicated followers threw dollar bills at the stage in glea, I knew I had encountered something fabulous. Having kicked off the work week in style, I thanked the star’s handsome friend George, and cabbed it home to get a little bit of much needed rest on the sabbath.
Candis makes her weekly appearances at:
Barracuda - Mondays at midnight
Opus 22 - Sundays at 6:00pm
Brite bar - Sundays at 11pm
